KODIAK, Alaska – Coast Guard Lt. Cmdr. Todd Lightle inspects the rear wheel well of a Coast Guard C-130 aircraft here in the morning darkness of an Alaska winter. Lightle is conducting his pre-flight inspection before the C-130 crew takes off. Though it is nearly 9 a.m., sunrise is more than an hour away. The crew faced rain and 20 knot winds as they took off.

Lightle is the co-pilot of a C-130 that transports equipment to the Coast Guard Long Range Navigation (LORAN) Station St. Paul Island in the Bering Sea. C-130 air crews regularly fly supplies to three remote LORAN stations in Alaska, those being Attu, Port Clarence and St. Paul Island. C-130 air crews also conduct law enforcement and living marine resource patrols, search and rescue and transportation missions. The five C-130 aircraft and crews of Coast Guard Air Station Kodiak fly thousands of miles each day. (Official Coast Guard photo by Petty Officer Paul Roszkowski)
