Arctic media flight from Anchorage to Coast Guard operations in Nome

JUNEAU, Alaska - The Coast Guard invites members of the media aboard an Arctic Awareness Flight Monday to the Coast Guard's Forward Operating Location  in Nome for a press brief with the Commandant of the Coast Guard.

Interested media will need to arrive at Signature Flight Services, Executive Terminal (6231 South Airpark Place, Anchorage, Alaska 99502, phone: 907-243-7627) no later than 8:30 a.m. AST. The Kodiak-based HC-130 search plane will depart at 9:30 a.m. to conduct the first part of Arctic Awareness flight and be in Nome for the news briefing about noon.

Following the brief, interviews with the speakers and personnel directly engaged in the operation will be available. At 2 p.m. the flight will continue from Nome north to conduct the second portion of Arctic flight and will return to Anchorage about 5 p.m. During the flights you will have the opportunity to tour the cockpit, interview C-130 air crewmembers and obtain unobstructed imagery of Arctic landmarks and terrain when the rear ramp is lowered.

The objective of the operation is to provide an appropriate Coast Guard presence in Northwest and Northern Alaska, assess operational effectiveness and overall capabilities of Coast Guard assets to operate in the Arctic, while providing medical, dental, optometry and veterinary services and water safety awareness to a number of communities in Northwest and Northern Alaska.
