NOME, Alaska -  Adm. Thad Allen, Coast Guard Commandant, visited Shishmaref today to oversee progress of Operation Arctic Crossroads and to see what effects coastal erosion have had on the village.

Allen met with Howard Weyiouanna Sr., Mayor of Shishmaref, who escorted him through the village and showed him the progression of coastal erosion along with living conditions.

Allen held a meeting with villagers where they had the opportunity to ask questions regarding what role the Coast Guard plays in Shishmaref.

Allen also visited the village clinic and veterinarians to see what kind of care the villagers are receiving from Coast Guard, Air Force, Army National Guard and Air National Guard personnel.
