Coast Guard Commandant holds press brief in Nome regarding Arctic operations

Thad Allen, to a crowd of media and military members during a press brief at the Alaska Air National Guard hangar Aug. 17, 2009.  The Commandant spoke about possible future roles the Coast Guard may be responsible for in Alaska and the outstanding work military personnel have accomplished during the beginning of the two-week operation Arctic Crossroads. Several White House and federal agency officials are participating in the new Ocean Policy Task Force. Led by the White House Council on Environmental Quality, the OPTF was established in July and is charged with developing a recommendation for a national policy that ensures protection, maintenance, and restoration of oceans, our coasts and the Great Lakes. Operation Arctic Crossroads is a multi-agency initiative consisting of the U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Air Force, Army National Guard, Air National Guard and U.S. Public Health Services personnel.  These military agencies deployed to Nome and Barrow for a 20-day initiative to provide medical, optometry, boating safety awareness and other community services to more than eight communities throughout Northern Alaska.
