San Francisco Based Coast Guard Unit Explores Arctic OpportunitiesWHO: U.S. Coast Guard Air Station San Francisco crewmembers who were sent to Barrow, Alaska, to assess the need and availability for a multi-mission permanent Coast Guard unit there are available to speak about their experiences. WHAT: A contingent of Coast Guard members recently returned from a deployment to the northernmost part of Alaska near the Beaufort Sea to experiment the possibility of a permanent multi-mission unit there because of new water created by a receding icecap. With international cooperation, the Coast Guard wants to ensure the safety and security of ships transiting through the northern passages. The unit will be capable of providing search and rescue, protection of marine life and natural resources, homeland security, maritime mobility and law enforcement. WHEN: 2 p.m. Sept. 16, 2008 WHERE: Coast Guard Air Station San Francisco Members of the media who are interested are requested to RSVP to the number above as soon as possible. |
